Julie Orpen
I produce lino prints and engravings using the historic presses at Gainsborough’s House workshop in Sudbury, Suffolk, as well as printing in my garden studio at home.
I studied Graphic Design at Norwich School of Art, and have attended courses and evening classes since then which have enabled me to expand my knowledge and practise of the various printing processes.
Lino printing has developed as my main way of working, often using multiple layers of colours to achieve my final image, although I have recently enjoyed engraving on a smaller scale.
I joined a group of 3 other local artists in 2015 – 4PRINTmakers, and together we have enjoyed successful exhibitions together.
I have exhibited my work in various exhibitions and locations in recent years. These include, The Pond Gallery and The Quay gallery (Snape Maltings), The Edmund Gallery and The Apex (Bury St. Edmunds), St Peter’s (Sudbury), and The Garage Gallery (Aldeburgh). I am also currently exhibiting with 4PRINTmakers at the Boat House Gallery (Flatford Mill), and I was also recently commissioned to illustrate a poetry book for The Happy Dragon’s Press.
I am inspired by the rich history of lino-printing and engraving, especially with artists such as Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden. My work reflects this, as well as my graphic design background, and the subject matter is often inspired by the natural world around me.
