Jan Brown
After finishing my A level art exam over 40 years ago, I didn’t pick up a brush, paintbox or pencil until I took early retirement from primary school teaching 10 years ago. I became particularly interested in botanical painting in both watercolour and pencil.
I was introduced to wood engraving when I went to an exhibition where Anne Hayward, a member of the Society of Woodengravers, was demonstrating. That was it, I was hooked before I had even picked up a tool and just had to learn the process. I attended a weekend workshop with the inspiring Harry Brockway three years ago and I haven’t looked back since.
I am still learning and with each block comes the determination to record the surrounding landscape. I recently moved to Suffolk where the continuous changing light and landscape is providing me with the inspiration to record this on the block and within the prints.
I am currently exhibiting in the Society of Woodengravers touring exhibition.
